…about the craft and artistry of PMDing.

See what they’re already saying…

“ADM is the kind of PMD who, if you have him help you with marketing and distribution for a film about monkeys, he’ll be researching ring-tailed lemurs in his spare time. Words like “thorough” and “involved” just scratch the surface explaining his work.”Michelle Elizabeth Kaffko, PMD/Revenge of the Electric Car

“Adam is relentless, focused and 100% committed to his work as a PMD. Additionally his passion for movies is inspiring and infectious.”Judy Goldberg, Presenter on The Production Office LIVE! (UK)

“If you’re even considering making an independent feature film, ADM should be the first hire on your crew list.”Oli Lewington, TinyButMighty

“While it may still be a new concept for the indie film world, the social marketing strategies of Adam’s brand of PMD have proven to be effective and brought results within just a few weeks of working closely with him.”Thorsten Chris Gritschke, director of Catnapping

“Adam is bionic! When it comes to blogging and social media, he is faster, more articulate and more prolific than anyone I know. He understands exactly how to use current social media to really push through, and no doubt he he will be at the cutting edge of new tools and technologies as they evolve.” Chris Jones, director of Oscar-nominated short Gone Fishing and Co-Head Guerilla Film

“Adam Daniel Mezei (pmdforhire.com) is a tireless champion of independent feature and documentary films, using inventive strategies to help his clients find opportunities and to harness the audiences the new independent film models are seeking in this cutting edge, alternative world of film production, exhibition and distribution. A must-have player on your team!”Jesse Pomeroy, director of World Full of Nothing (WFON) and head man at Hillrose Street

“Adam truly works for you and gives you the necessary tools you need to carry your campaign out successfully. I have learned an enormous amount from him and am so appreciative of his fantastic work and can-do attitude!”Sarah Wharton, actress on Percival’s Big Night

“Really outstanding is his talent to scrape together every piece of valuable information when working on a specific topic or task.”Juliane Block, director J-Blockbuster

“I found it extremely important that Adam shared his knowledge about crowdfunding, audience-building and DIY filmmaking from a North American perspective. Although there are some differences between Europe and North America in terms of independently producing and financing films, most insights given by Adam were deeply valuable for the participants of the [Digital Film Camp 2012].”Wolfgang Gumpelmaier, gumpelMEDIA

“His enthusiasm can seem unreal at times — who gets that excited about indie film and social media? Adam honestly does. I’m not the first to say it, and I certainly won’t be the last: Adam is a must-have for any indie film project.”Anjuli Campbell, film student

With the sheer explosion of DIY marketing and distribution tools and platforms over the past few years, the playing field has been drastically leveled in the movie business compared to just a decade ago.

No longer are filmmakers compelled to wait for distribution company gatekeepers, sales agents, buyers, or studio execs to approve their scripts, crews, and concepts or to wait for decisionmakers to sign off on their stories or promotional plans and follow strategic plans which aren’t of their own making. This power now rests within the hands of the filmmakers themselves. The ability to go get the the money is stronger than it’s ever been previously.

Filmmakers can handle a lot of these DIY marketing and distribution responsibilities on their own, but a trend in development since around 2009 has been the need to hire a PMD, or Producer of Marketing and Distribution, to captain and wrangle down all of these various responsibilities and assets.

Rather than yank themselves off of key production duties — which for most filmmaker/producers includes raising funding for their movie and shooting the very best story possible — PMDs are embedded within a film unit from inception and tasked with the exclusive duty to engage a filmmaker’s true audiences and niches using a suite of tools and metrics which form the weapons in the PMD’s arsenal.

As PMDing becomes a more recognized above-the-line crew role, the need to deconstruct what the PMD does and to promote the existence of the role is now more powerful than ever.

I will educate about the rudiments of the job and do it in an entertaining manner. Have a look at the following sample:

  • “Enter the PMD:” What do PMDs do and why do indie filmmakers need Producers of Marketing and Distribution anyways? Can’t they do these things all by themselves? I’ll demonstrate why PMDs are more necessary than ever before and why you leave these respective duties unattended to at your film’s peril.
  • “Crowdfunding” tutorial: Learn all about one of the fastest techniques to raise a percentage of your film’s budget from the crowd. I’ll teach you about the proper way to “make the ask” and some of the techniques you need to follow as you vigorously pursue your campaign. Indies outside of the US/Canada, this applies to you too!
  • Key relationships to build: You’ve got a great idea for a movie and are raring to go on the screenplay write yesterday, but unfortunately filmmaking is a committee effort, the collaborative power of a group of like-minded individuals. What are some of these key relationships you’ll need to start building already from today?
  • Fan engagement methodologies: What are some of the techniques PMDs use to engage audiences over the long-term? What are some of the methods I use as I go about fulfilling contract work for clients and sussing out their niche audiences? Here’s your chance to find out.
  • Social media secrets: I’ll share several tips for leveraging the very best of social media for your indie film or documentary whether on FacebookTwitterGoogle Plus, and the various other social media platforms that crop up from time to time. It’s the PMD’s responsibility to know what’s cutting-edge.
  • Analytics tutorial: So what do the numbers really mean? Does thousands of Facebook Friends or even more Twitter followers matter? Let me break down some of the figures for you. Analytics may seem daunting, but when it comes to getting an audience to actually watch your film, the numbers can actually be your best friend.
  • No-budget PR and promotions: You’re constrained by your no-budget, but need to get some public relations traction in advance your film’s festival run? What are some of the key techniques to garner no-budget PR in your particular situation? Let me share some of my experiences…
  • Trailer/teasers tutorial: Cutting a trailer isn’t something to be taken lightly! Mistake number one: you don’t want your existing film’s editor (especially if this is you) doing the editing because this person is typically too close to the material. Ideally, you should be hiring a trailer production house, but there are ways to make this process more effective and possibly less expensive for you. Let me share with you best practices regarding trailer production campaigns from some of my previous clients.
  • Deliverables lists: There’s so much to do and know in such a short span of time — how is it possible to know all this stuff and shoot my movie?! Ah, that’s why we need a Deliverables List to keep all the tasks organized and in one place. It keeps the unit on track — who needs to be where doing what and on what day, sort of thing — and I’ll show you several ways how to set one up and manage it throughout all three stages of the production cycle: pre-, production, and post-. It will keep you on track and the crew flowing.
  • “Damage control:” Strictly for those indies who have already begun to dabble in some of the methods described above, but didn’t do so properly, for long enough, or stopped prematurely because they ran out of funds somewhere along the way. Your case is not lost! Allow me show you several crack ways how you can recover from earlier miscues.
  • Live event management: Live events are one of your best ways to engage your target niche: face-to-face interactions trump all. Let me run through several instances of what I did for previous clients and several co-sponsorship opportunities you might consider as you embark upon this key stage in your DIY distribution plan.
  • The festival circuit: you’ve identified film festivals as a key component of your distribution plans and overall rollout to the public. Let me share with you some do’s and don’ts and how you can leverage the thrill, the energy, and the market section of the festival circuit for maximum gain.

BIO Long (230 words)

PMD-For-Hire (www.pmdforhire.com) is a full-service, full-time, 6-days/week film marketing and distribution shop.

I serve the needs of indie documentary and features clients, working intimately with production crews on a strictly embedded basis as part of a minimum 3-month introductory commitment — or longer — to help get projects needed audience traction and off the ground.

The overall aim of the service is to help filmmakers brand their films accordingly.

I harp on the need to develop sound traditional marketing, blogging, and social media evangelism techniques — among a dozen others — to painstakingly replicate in “micro-version” what the studios devote hundreds of thousands — millions, even — of dollars to.

My techniques are custom-designed to inculcate solid habits from the get-go for filmmakers who are deathly serious about their long-term career prospects and who also wish to harness the boundless power of the newly-democratized filmmaking milieu in true DIY/DIWO-style.

The point of the exercise is to get filmmakers generating a steady cash flow from their work so they can continue to shoot films.

While every project’s ultimate marketing and distribution goals are indeed different, demanding bespoke approaches each time out after a critical evaluation of a project’s current marketing assets and personnel, the methodologies I leverage are similar depending upon which stage of the production process I’m parachuted into.

The techniques I employ are varied, yet standardized because they work.
